The “Octopussy” Floor Lamp
At first glance, it does look funny, but the functionality of this floor lamp is anything but laughable.
Vladimir Tomilov is the creative mind behind the “Octopussy”, a floor lamp with ‘tentacles’ for legs and a ‘giant eye’ for light. You’d think it would serve only as an accent piece in any room but, upon closer inspection, you’ll realize that the Russian industrial designer definitely knows what he’s doing.
The “Octopussy” derived its name from its resemblance to the octopus, with its large rounded head and its tentacles. (I have no idea if there is any connection to the 007 film, although you are free to draw your own conclusions.)
First, take a look at the legs of this floor lamp. Aside from three support legs, it also has three tentacles, with additional LED bulbs attached at their tips, adding to its functionality and overall look.
The graceful curve of the sleek, black bubble complements the “movement” of the tentacle legs, while the colored lens add that much needed dash of color to the design. The use of shutter for bulb, on the other hand, gives one that impression of a giant eye.
The elegant yet eye-catching design of the “Octopussy” earned the Moscow-based Tomilov the coveted design award during the 2011 Design and Design International Awards held in Paris, France.
The design became such a hit that, in addition to being included in the Designbook list, it was given the honor of being the cover of “Designbook Volume 4” when it was published.
This is definitely one cool and unique-looking floor lamp. If and when the Octopussy becomes for sale, would you want it in your living room, office, or bedroom?
