Sozopol – The Town Of Apollo
Sozopol is one of most ancient bulgarian towns ,situated on the seaside of the Black sea ,only 20 km southern from the city of Burgas. It is a place ,which unites an amazing combination of ancient byzantine history and a modern sea resort. In the year of 610 BC ,on the place of the town has been established a Hellenic colony named Apolonia Pontika ( “Apolonia “ from Apollo ,a God from the Greek mythology). The town of Apollo has been known as an important trade and seaport town,the most developed of all others.
The name of the town is changed in IV th century to Sozopol “the town of the salvation” after the roman invasion and its been officially known as a traditional byzantine town. Sozopol is a town surrounded by castle walls which remain untouched by the following Turkish invasion.The churches and many more landmarks are also in a state of good preservation. In the twenties of 20th century ,part of the greek population of Sozopol moves to Chalkidiki,Greece and founds there a village named “Sozopoli”. Visiting this amazing place you will feel the athmosphere of the modern life and the breathe of the ancient history of the Balkans , a place excellent for vacation.
